Kano State government on Monday insisted that the controversial viral video showing underaged voters did not emanate from the state, saying that it belongs to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Different media platforms, especially the social media was flooded with pictures and video showing underage voters, who allegedly participated during the penultimate Saturday local government area elections in Kano State.

INEC after absolving itself of blames on the issues, despite the fact that its materials was used to conduct the elections, had last week announced that it was going to probe the alleged underage voting in Kano State.

But addressing a gathering of the 2nd Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) National Conference holding in Kano, the spokesperson of the state government and Commissioner of Information, Alhaji Muhammad Garba, insisted that the video did not emanate from the state.

He argued that the video was shot on March 30th, 2015, adding that INEC should be the one to be held responsible for the video because it belonged to the commission.

“The Council poll in Kano was adjudged the freest in the history of council polls in Nigeria by both local and international observers, and I made bold to say that the controversial video belongs to INEC.

“The viral video contained scenes where INEC card readers was deployed and nothing of such was used in the last council poll in Kano,” he said.

He meanwhile said that it was good that INEC has decided to probe the matter, expressing optimism that the outcome of the commission’s investigation would exonerate Kano government.
