Wike’s sack: This gets interesting

Published

on

The sacking of Rivers State governor, by the election tribunal which sat in Abuja to me has thrown some more excitement into the political shenanigans going on in Rivers State. The governor’s camp has sent signals that they will be appealing the judgement and Infact are even querying the descision of the Tribunal to hurriedly deliver judgement when the ruling on its jurisdiction by the Supreme Court was still awaited.

Whatever the case is, I feel very strongly that this ruling should stand. Wike is good riddance to bad rubbish, a relic of our recent past which we would be glad to erase and forget that it ever happened in the annals of our history.

In all my years as a political commentator and analyst, I have never seen a candidate come to power, or seek power on one major platform- political vendetta. All Wike was concerned with was the total annihilation of Amaechi. He had no other plan, he ran with vengeance on his mind, he took power with vengeance and did everything possible to humiliate, if possible imprison Amaechi.

We all remember the issue of stolen plates and spoons. This was the first week of his government. Everything he did in office was geared towards showing the world that Amaechi was a miscreant. I do not think he had any plans for the good people of Rivers State. Energy and scarce resources were ploughed into the anti Amaechi mud fest which In itself was a continuation of the war between Amaechi and the ex First Lady.

Amaechi himself, not one to back down from a war, gave as good as he got and the mudsling and scandals kept flowing and flying from both sides. It all climaxed with the inauguration of a judicial panel of enquiry which inevitably found Amaechi guilty of all sorts. I got tired of these childish attempt at governance by revenge that I wrote several articles on the matter beseeching both sides to grow up.

Amaechi’s camp reached out to me. His media aide called up and tried to explain their position. I was impressed at this but still told them my mind, that this fight was belittling Amaechi especially in the childish manner he was responding to all Wike’s shots including the very banal and preposterous ones. My position was very clear as I thought he was eroding his tremendous public goodwill as he continually engaged this pedestrian politician in his diatribes.

My advise went unheeded as the fights continued. Well I guess Amaechi knew what he was doing because today he seems to be smiling, he has just scaled the Senate screening despite the hurdles Wike threw at him, Wike has just been sacked and I sense that this will open another round of ‘fight’ between these two.

My position is for Amaechi to rise above these and be the statesman that he is. He should end this fight especially now that he seems to be having the upper hand and concentrate on bigger things of statesmanlike proportions. Wike is in the gutters where I believe he truly belongs and should be left there to wallow in the dirt of his thoughts and his being.
