​​Leicester City crash out of Champions League

English Premier League side Leicester City failed to overturn a one-goal deficit from their first-leg quarter-final tie against Atletico Madrid, as they drew 1-1 at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night to crash out of the UEFA Champions League.

The Spanish side ended Leicester’s debut Champions League campaign after the latter defeated another Spanish giants, Sevilla to reach the last-8 of the competition.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg in Spain, Atletico got ahead through Saul Niguez’s first-half header, leading 2-0 on aggregate at half-time.

But City took the game to Atletico after the break and gave themselves hope via Jamie Vardy’s close-range finish on the hour mark, to crash out 1-2 on aggregate as the visitors held on to reach their third semi-final in four seasons.

​Head coach of the Foxes, Craig Shakespeare, who took over from he former Boss Claudio Ranieri, was proud of his boys despite the defeat. The first timers couldn’t have come this far in the continental league without great effort.

“​The momentum was with us after Vardy’s goal and we needed that second one when the opportunity came but it just wasn’t to be​,” Shakespeare said after the game.

​”The whole club, from the supporters to the players to the owners can be immensely proud, but I’ve just said to the players that they should want more of this and they’ve agreed that that’s what they want.​”​
