2019 ELECTIONS: SDP loses out as names of Duke, Gana absent in INEC’s final list of candidates

Final list of candidates participating in the 2019 presidential, senatorial, House of Reps and state assemblies elections has been released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC made the list public through its verified Twitter handle, @inecnigeria.

The list for presidential candidates has 144 names which comprises 72 presidential candidates and 72 vice-presidential candidates.

However, no presidential candidate or running mate’s name was listed for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the coming election.

The development followed the tussle between a former Minister of Information, Jerry Gana, and ex-governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke over the party’s presidential ticket.

While courts ruled that Gana is the authentic candidate of the party, the SDP on its own, accepts Duke as candidate for the party.

The list also contains names of 28 women who are either candidates or running mates.

The youngest candidate in the list is the vice-presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), 30-year-old Johnson Omede.

There are also Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili of the Allied Peoples Movement of Nigeria; Mr. Kingsley Moghalu of the Young Progressives Party; Mr. Sina Fagbenro-Byron of the KOWA Party; and Mr. Fela Durotoye of the Alliance for New Nigeria; Mr. Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress; Mr. Obadaiah Mailafia of the African Democratic Congress; Mrs. Eunice Atuejide of the National Interest Party, among others.
