3 dead, 20 injured as van drives into crowd in Germany

At least three persons have been killed and about 20 others injured in the western German city of Muenster after a van rammed into people sitting outside a popular restaurant.

Police at the scene of the incident said that the driver of the van shot himself and died, adding that they are not in search for more suspects.

Six people are said to be in serious condition following the incident which took place near the Kiepenkerl statue in the old town.

The police have already closed the area and directed people to avoid the city centre, while noting that it was still too early to affirm if the incident was an attack.

Although the identity of the suspect is yet to be ascertained, German media report claimed that the driver may be a German national with mental health problems.

But authorities said that a suspicious object was found in the van but did not specify what it was.

Government deputy spokesperson, Ulrike Demmer, said the government’s thoughts were with the victims and their families.

Recall that a lorry had also in December 2016, ploughed into a crowd at a Christmas market in the German capital, Berlin killing 12 persons.
