Amazing find? CPC says Nigerians are pissed off with power supply

According to the Consumer Protection Council, issues in the Nigerian power sector attract more complaints from consumers, far outweighing those of the banking, telecommunications and aviation sectors among others.

The Director General, CPC, Mrs. Dupe Atoki, made the observation in her speech at the second Nigerian Institute of Public Relations Stakeholders’ Conference in Lagos on Friday.

She said though the number of people becoming aware of their rights as consumers was on the rise in the sector, more still needed to be done. The theme of the conference was: The Nigerian Consumer – Rights, Duties and Obligations.

This is coming on the heels of an outcry by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission that one of the observable gaps in the emergent electricity market is the absence of knowledgeable, credible and broad based advocacy for electricity consumers.

Atoki said the number of complaints cases were fast rising, as more people were now beginning to insist on their rights as consumers.

The Head, CPC, Lagos Office, Mr. Tam Tamunokonbia, said the reasons power sector complaints had continued to top the chart among various sectors in the country were because issues bordering on estimated billings, poor metering, arbitrary charges, poor investment on networks, among others, have been left to drag on for a very long period of time.
