Arsenal end Man United's unbeaten run, boost top four chances

Arsenal ended Manchester United 25-match unbeaten run after grabbing a 2-0 victory over the Red Devils at the Emirates Stadium, to boost their chances of finishing top four in the English Premier League.

After a goalless first 45 minutes, Granit Xhaka put the home team ahead with a looping shot from distance, which came off the back of Ander Herrera and went over goalkeeper David de Gea on 54 minutes.

And Danny Welbeck doubled the lead three minutes later when he headed home against his former club after a cross from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

“Let’s just build on this win, hopefully we can win all of our other games and then see where that takes us,” Arsenal Midfielder, Aaron Ramsey, said after the win.

And goalscorer, Welbeck, added: “It’s really important to get the win. Taking into account our position in the table we need to be further up there. With this win hopefully we’ll have a good end to the season.”

Still in the race for a spot at next season’s UEFA Champions League, Manchester United will be looking to edge past Celta Vigo on Thursday and reach the final.

“I’m disappointed with the result, not the performance. I liked individual performances and also collective performances,” United manager Jose Mourinho, said after the defeat.

“It is all on the Europa League. We tried to play for a result today, you can say I made changes, but you cannot say we didn’t try to win the game. Everything for Thursday now.”

But Sunday’s result means Arsenal remain in sixth place but are two points off United in fifth and six points off Manchester City in fourth, with a game in hand over both teams.

Arsenal will travel to Southampton for their next league game.
