ASP who tied, shot 7 farmers to death in Adamawa arrested

An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), accused of arresting, tying and shooting seven farmers dead in Adamawa State has been arrested.

His arrest was confirmed by the state Police Command’s spokesperson, Othman Abubakar on Thursday. He said that the ASP is currently in detention and that investigation into the case is ongoing.

A Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Progressive Mind for Development Initiate, had in a petition signed by its president, Abubakar Abdulsalam, accused the officer of committing the extra judicial killings on November 23, 2017.

According to petition, the ASP as at the time of the alleged crime, was in charge of Safer Highways Patrol Team. He was alleged to have arrested the farmers, who were working on their farms on the outskirts of Gombi town, tied and shot them to death.

The same ASP was further accused in the petition to have earlier on April 30, 2016, while he was in charge of a police outpost in Kem village, Shelleng Local Government Area of the state, also killed four robbery suspects.

Part of the petition read, “We as a concerned organization consider the act of the suspect (policeman) as an act against the provision of the Constitution and infringement on the fundamental rights of the people in question.

“If such act is not checked, it will continue to spread like wild fire and eventually Nigeria will be unsafe for its citizens.”
