Australian Open: Murray, Federer, others through to second round

The Australian Open got off to a flying start on Monday as Sir Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber were among those in action on the first day of the Slam, but not all went through to the second round of the tournament.

World No. 1 Murray reached the second round with a straight-sets 7-5 7-6 6-2 win over Illya Marchenko, despite being below his best.

Federer’s return got a big reception and the crowd certainly weren’t disappointed, as the Swiss, who has been out of Grand Slam action since losing to Milos Raonic in the semi-final of Wimbledon in 2016, kept up his end of the bargain, beating Jurgen Melzer 7-5 3-6 6-2 6-2.

Fourth seed Simona Halep was knocked out in her first match, in a surprise 6-3 6-1 defeat to American Shelby Rogers.

Australian wildcard Alex De Minaur, 17, booked his place in the second round after fighting back from two sets to one down against Gerald Melzer, in what can be termed as the win of the day.

There have been plenty of shocks and close encounters on the first day, setting the tone for what promises to be a superb tournament.
