Bangladesh police gun down prime suspect of July cafe attack

The prime suspect of last year’s July cafe attack has been gunned down in Bangladesh by counter-terrorism police when they opened fire on two Islamist militants in the city of Dhaka.

According to Monirul Islam, chief of Dhaka’s counter-terrorism police, the prime suspect Nurul Islam Marjan, a commander of a splinter group of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) jihadist group, was killed along with another militant, Monirul Islam.

Marjan led the attack on a cafe in the capital last year which witnessed the slaughter of 20 hostages, mostly foreigners with reports revealing that, so far, the police have hunted down and killed at least 40 militants linked to the cafe attack, including mastermind Tamim Chowdhury.
