Suarez scores hat-trick as Barcelona thrash Real Madrid, go top of La Liga

In the absence of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho spurred Barcelona to victory over Real Madrid in the first El Clasico of the La Liga season.

Suarez scored a hat-trick as the Catalans thrashed their rivals 5-1 at the Camp Nou to go top of the La Liga table on Sunday.

It was the first time since December 2007 that the El Clasico did not feature Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but the goals did not stop coming.

Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring early in the first half before Suarez’s hattrick, which was punctured by a goal by Marcelo for Real, before a final goal came for the hosts by Arturo Vidal.
