Burkina Faso govt says it thwarted coup attempt by ousted-leader’s forces

The government of Burkina Faso on Friday claimed frustrating a “vast conspiracy” earlier October, which was targeted to overthrow government.

The government said the coup plotters were forces loyal to the country’s ousted ex- President Blaise Compaore.

The country’s Interior Minister, Simon Compaore, not a relation to the ex-leader, disclosing this, said that some 30 men from the former leader’s security division had conspired to free prisoners who happened to be part of September 2015 coup attempt and then attack the presidential palace.

The Interior Minister further stated that the coup was intended for October 8.

The county’s former President, Compaore was ejected from office in October 2014 after citizens of the country took to the streets to violently protest against his efforts to change the constitution to enable him continue in power.

Troops from the presidential guard, loyal to the ex-leader, had in 2015 attempted a coup which failed to materialise after they were blocked by street protesters and the army, which attacked the plotters’ barracks.
