CAFCC: Rivers United draw Club Africain, FUS in group stage

Nigerian Professional Football League side, Rivers United, have been handed Club Africain of Tunisia, Fath Union Sport de Rabat (FUS Rabat) of Morocco and Uganda’s KCAA in the group stage draw of the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup.

In a draw held on Wednesday in Cairo, Egypt, the Pride of Rivers who dumped out Rayon Sports 2-0 on aggregate in the playoffs round were drawn with the trio in Group A.

Morocco’s Rabat were winners of the Caf Champions League in 2010 and were also runners-up in the Caf Super Cup in 2011.

Rivers United originally qualified for the Caf Champions League but came unstuck against Sudanese club, Al-Merreikh in the first round, before dropping to Africa’s second-tier club competition.

Reacting to the draw on Wednesday, the Rivers United boss, Stanley Eguma expressed confidence in his side’s ability to progress to the last eight of the competition.

“I must say it is a very tough group with two North African clubs from Morocco and Tunisia but we are confident of qualifying for the quarterfinals,” he told reporters.

“We must also not overlook or underrate (Ugandan club), KCAA who have also earned a right to be here.

“Now, we must work hard, study our opponents and try to do Nigeria proud.”

No Nigerian club has ever won the Caf Confederation Cup title and the ‘Pride of Rivers’ will be looking to end that record.
