Chinese firm to begin construction of Mambilla project early 2019

The Joint Venture partners engaged to construct the 3,050 Megawatts Mambilla hydropower plant said it would commence work on the project early next year.

In a statement on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, CGCC, the construction consortium, had assured President Muhammadu Buhari it would soon complete all preliminary processes necessary to start the project.

According to Shehu, Buhari had met with the President of the CGCC, Prof Lyu Ze Xiang, in Beijing on Thursday.

Recall that President Buhari had joined other African leaders to attend the just-concluded Forum of China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit where he signed an agreement with the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, on the project.

The presidential spokesman said Buhari met with officials of the construction company shortly before his departure at the end of his six-day official trip to China.

On his part, Xiang pointed out that President Jinping wanted more detailed and updated feasibility and sustainability studies on the project, adding that the Nigerian officials and the project consultant would meet in two weeks to address concerns by the Chinese President.

“We fully understand the importance of this project to the economic and social wellbeing of Nigeria.

“In two weeks, we will sit down with the parties for the economic and sustainability analysis. It will take about four weeks to conclude the update. Our target is to commence the project early next year,” Xiang said.
