NYSC withholds discharge certificates of foreign-trained ex-corpers

The date of commencement of the new N30, 000 minimum wage payment for corps members has not been decided, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) said on Wednesday.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brig-Gen. Shuaibu, said the scheme has not received a directive from the Minister of Finance to commence payment of the new minimum wage to corps members.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja on the sideline of the opening of the NYSC management meeting with representatives of state governments, Shuaibu, was however upbeat that corps members would benefit from the new wage.

While highlighting other benefits attached to the new minimum wage, he pointed out that key responsibilities of state and local governments, as spelt out in Section 7, Sub-section 3 and 4 as well as Section 8 of the NYSC Act, included provisions of befitting orientation camps, accommodation for corps members, land for agriculture, security of corps members, release of state subventions, among others.

He said the Federal Government carried the heavier cost of running the scheme through feeding and medical services of corps members and payment of allowances, among others.
