Super Falcons coach, Thomas Dennerby, has expressed his disappointment over his side’s 1-0 defeat to Banyana Banyana of South Africa on Sunday.

A stunning strike from substitute Chrestina Thembi Kgatlana five minutes from time condemned the defending champions to defeat in the Africa Women’s Cup on Nations (AWCON) Group B opening clash.

Dennerby, who is leading the national team to defend the title they won in 2016, blamed the result on missed chances.

Desire Oparanozie, Asisat Oshoala, Francisca Ordega, and Rasheedat Ajibade all missed chances during the encounter.

“I am very disappointed that we lost the game, ” Dennerby said in his post-match interview after the game.

“It would have been fair if the game had ended in a draw. We had a bit more of the possession and South Africa are really good on counter attacks; we were aware and had analysed before the game so we knew what was coming.

“I think everybody will agree that we should have scored at least once in the first half and we missed that chance.”

Nigeria will take on Zambia in their matchday two outing, as they hope to earn their first win in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Zambia thrashed Equatorial Guinea 5-0 in the other Group B clash in Cape Coast also on Sunday, to record their first ever win in the competition.

They will face eight-time champions Falcons in matchday two on Wednesday.
