DRC on the edge over delay in announcing presidential election results

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has called for a recount of votes of the just concluded presidential elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo which was reportedly marred by irregularities.

“A recount would provide the necessary reassurance to both winners and losers,” SADC said in a statement on Sunday.

The SADC- a 16 member regional block which includes Angola and South Africa also called for the formation of a national unity government.

“SADC draws the attention of Congolese politicians to similar arrangements that were very successful in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya” that created the “necessary stability for durable peace,” the statement said.

The statement by the SADC also comes hours after election loser Martin Fayulu appealed to the country’s Constitutional Court to cancel the provisional result of the just concluded presidential election.

Fayulu’s appeal against the result of last month’s election came after he claimed he won with 62 percent of the votes cast.
