D’Tigers, Eaglets, Jighere get Buhari’s monetary rewards

As part of his policy to reward excellence, President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday rewarded world scrabble champion, Wellington Jighere, the D’Tigers team which won Nigeria’s first Afrobasket title in Tunisia and qualified for the Olympics men’s basketball event and the Golden Eaglets, who won Nigeria’s fifth U-17 world title in Chile with monetary rewards.

For their efforts, the D’Tigers got N600,000 each, with their coach getting N600,000 while other officials got N250,000 each.

World scrabble champion, Wellington Jighere, got N1.5m, while his coach got N1.2m.

The Golden Eaglets were given N1.2 million each, while their head coach Emmanuel Amuneke got N900,000 and his assistants N600,000 while other team officials got N200,000 to N300,000 each.

The 1985 squad, who won the inaugural U-17 World Cup when Buhari was military head of state, got N2m each, while their coaches got N1.5m.

The U-23 Eagles that won the 2015 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations were each rewarded with N500,000 while the coach, Samson Siasia, got the same amount.
