Due reward? Buhari appoints BBOG leader, Hadiza Bala-Usman, NPA MD

By Timothy Enietan-Matthews …
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Hadiza Bala-Usman as the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA.

Bala-Usman is taking over from Habib Abdullahi, who was earlier removed as MD in April 2015 but reappointed August 2015 the same year.

The appointment of Bala-Usman, a notable leader of the Bring Back Our Girls, BBOG advocacy group, is coming days after the group openly indicted President Buhari, calling him a disappointment.

The grouse of the group with the president stemmed from the non-action in rescuing the over 200 abducted girls kidnapped from the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.

Her appointment may be government’s way of placating the outspoken group, or outrightly breaking their ranks.

The Federal Government, in a statement signed by the Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Yetunde Sonaike, in Abuja also indicated that the Federal Government approved the appointments of Mohammed Bello-Koko as Executive Director, Finance, Prof. Idris Abubakar, Executive Director Engineering and Dr Sekonte Davies as Executive Director, Marine Operations.

Bala-Usman was born on January 2, 1976 in Zaria, Kaduna State and has a B.Sc. Business Administration from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria and a Post Graduate in Development Studies from University of Leeds, UK in 2009.

She worked at Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) from July 2000 to August 2004 as Enterprise Officer and was hired by the UNDP for the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) from October 2004 to January 2008 as Special Assistant to the Minister on Project Implementation.

She was, between 2011 and 2015 the Director of Strategy of the Good Governance Group, a non-governmental organisation founded by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and his friends before her appointment as Chief of Staff to El-Rufa’i.
