EGYPT: 30 suspected militants killed in ground and air raids

A sting operation by Egyptian security forces which involved ground and air raids in the past four days has witnessed the killing of no less than 30 militants in Northern Sinai.

According to a statement by the Egyptian military, “30 “highly dangerous” militants were killed and five others arrested in the raids, though it did not name a specific militant group or release names of those killed.

Recall two weeks ago, that an operation by Egyptian police targeted at fugitive militants linked to recent attacks on security forces also witnessed the killing of 16 gunmen in two shootouts.

In the first shootout also in Northern Sinai, gunmen opened fire on police as they approached a desert training camp for militants in Ismailia.

The officers returned fire and a fierce gun battle ensued which saw the killing of 14 militants, five of whom have been identified so far according to Egyptian security operatives.

In the second shootout, two men described as fugitive terrorists died in an exchange of gunfire with police in the city of Giza, according to Egyptian Interior Ministry.

Since 2013, Egypt has faced an Islamist insurgency led by the Islamic State group in the Sinai Peninsula, where hundreds of soldiers and police have been killed.
