Europa: Spurs crash out, Lyon, others through to round-of-16

English top-flight side Tottenham Hotspur were knocked out of the Europa League as Gent held them to a 2-2 draw at Wembley on Thursday night.

Spurs were1-0 down from the first leg of the last-32 tie, and needed at least two goal to none from their opponents to clinch a spot in the last-16, but Gent made their point by coming from behind twice to equal the number of goals.

Christian Eriksen opened the scoring for the home team in 10 minutes, but the visitors equalised through Harry Kane’s unfortunate own goal ten minutes later.

Midfielder Dele Alli was then sent off shortly before half-time for a dangerous high tackle, as Spurs were reduced to 10-men.

Victor Wanyama’s curler into the top-left corner revived Spurs’ hopes, only for substitute Jeremy Perbet to prod Gent into the last 16 with less than 10 minutes left.

Elsewhere, French League giants Olympique Lyon were on fire as they thump AZ Alkmaar 7-1 after a 4-1 triumph in the first leg.

AS Roma were defeated 0-1 by Villarreal, but the Italian side scaled through as they already earned a 4-0 victory at the Spanish side last week.

Spain’s Celta Vigo also made it to the round of 16, as they beat Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 in response to their 1-0 defeat in the first leg.
