Former Russian economy minister slapped with 8-yr jail term for bribery

Alexei Ulyukayev, Russia’s former economy minister has been slammed with an eight-year jail term after a court found him guilty of collecting the sum of $2million as bribe.

Reports say Ulyukayev was found guilty of collecting the bribe from Igor Sechin, the CEO of oil giant Rosneft in a verdict described as totally groundless by a Putin adviser.

Moment after the presiding judge, Larisa Semyonova, had pronounced the sentence, court bailiffs put handcuffs on Ulyukayev and escorted him to a cage in the courtroom after.

The court also ruled that Ulyukayev must pay a fine of more than 130 million roubles ($2.21 million).

Last month, Suleiman Kerimov, one of Russia’s richest men and a serving senator faced formal investigation after he was arrested in France over allegations of tax evasion.

Reports say the billionaire senator was arrested in Nice and moments after he was picked up, Russia summoned a French diplomat in Moscow to protest about his detention.
