Governorship: Appeal Court dashes Mama Taraba’s dream

Published

on

The dream of Hajia Aisha Alhassan to go on record as the first elected female governor in Nigeria came crashing on Thursday, as the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, set aside the verdict of Taraba State governorship election petition tribunal which nullified the victory of Governor Dairus Ishaku at the April 11 governorship election in the state.

According to the court, the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Aisha Alhassan, had no locus standi to question the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries.

The Appeal Court’s five- man panel led by Justice Abdul Aboki held that the PDP fielded Ishaku and he was accepted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Despite the testimony of an INEC officer that the PDP primaries violated sections 85 and 87 of the electoral law, the Appeal Court panel still ruled that the APC had no locus standing to challenge the PDP primaries.
