Kano Assembly suspends probe of Sanusi as Osinbajo, Sultan, others interfere

The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended its investigation of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, following a letter by the state Governor Abdulahi Ganduje asking it to drop the probe in respect of the intervention of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and others.

Speaker Kabiru Alhassan Rirum, on Monday, on the floor of the House, read the letter from the governor pleading with the state lawmakers to drop the probe as a result of interventions by very important personalities in the case.

The letter listed the personalities to include Osinbajo, APC party leaders; former heads of state Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar; Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar; and top businessmen and indigenes of the state, including Aliko Dangote and Aminu Dantata.

Ganduje said in as much as he would not want to meddle with the affairs of the Assembly, he was only appealing to them to “temper justice with mercy” and allow peace reign.

He said, “Much as I recognize your independence as a separate arm of government and who has right to investigate the emir, I am pleading with you to allow peace prevail.

“There is no gain saying (the fact) that the Emir Muhammadu Sunusi ii has admitted all his faults and mistakes and agreed to make adjustment. I think at this juncture, we should allow peace as been achieved to continue.”

Only recently, Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission, investigating the alleged misuse of N6billion by the Emirate council, also suspended its probe.

The state anti-corruption agency gave the state’s House of Assembly launching of a similar investigation on alleged funds misappropriation, “defamation of character, breach of oath of office/oath of allegiance, abuse of office privileges and protocol, and political and religious interference” of the emir, as the reason it dropped its probe.
