KENYA DECIDES: 3 feared dead during protests over election fraud claims

Three people have been reportedly killed in Kenya during protests after opposition claimed the country’s general election was ‘hacked’ in favour of the incumbent, President Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to Nairobi city police Chief Japheth Koome, two people were shot dead in the capital after he claimed they took advantage of the protests sparked by Kenya opposition leader Raila Odinga to steal.

Leonard Katana, a regional police commander also informed that one more person was shot dead earlier in the day in South Mugirango constituency in Kisii County, around 300km west of Nairobi, during a clash with security forces.

The violence has stirred memories of the unrest following the 2007 vote in which more than 1,000 people were killed.

Thus far, Kenyatta is leading with 55 per cent of the vote to Odinga’s 44 per cent in early results released by the electoral commission (IEBC).

A week before the elections, scores of Kenyans fled their country in droves over fear that the general elections may spark ethnic violence among rival parties.

According to reports, household items like soap, long-life milk, maize flour and cooking oil are flying off the shelves of supermarkets in Nairobi as people stock up on foodstuff and other essential items amid fears that violent protests will break out once the result of the elections are announced.
