Kenyan opposition leader calls for resignation, prosecution of electoral body

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has made good his threat to contest the re-election of Uhuru Kenyatta at last week polls after his lawyers filed a petition with the Supreme Court to that effect.

Moments after filling the petition, Odinga and his running mate, Kalonzo Musyoka in a statement said they were seeking redress at the high court because of alleged irregularities in the August 8 presidential vote.

Those included, among others, “numerous instances when their ticket was denied votes and others in which their competitor … had undeserved votes added to his total,” the statement read.

After he was defeated by 54 percent of votes cast, Odinga accused the ruling party of a “computer-generated presidency”, claiming that the election results were hacked and rigged in favour of Kenyatta.

Odinga also defied calls for calm by the United Nations after he called for a strike to support his claim to the presidency and accused the ruling party of “spilling the blood of innocent people”.

A day after Kenyatta was declared the winner of the presidential polls, police opened fire to disperse protesters who blocked roads and set up barricades in the capital, Nairobi, on Saturday.
