Lagos boat mishap claims 5 lives

A tragic boat accident in the Ikorodu Area of Lagos State has reportedly claimed the lives of no less than five victims.

Reports say the cause of the accident which claimed the lives of the victims; four male and one female, whose corpses had been deposited at the morgue of the Ikorodu General Hospital, is yet to be ascertained.

According to Adesina Tiamiyu, the General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency and Management who confirmed the incident, the boat belonging to a firm, Blue Sea, was travelling to Ikorodu from Lagos Island when it capsized mid-sea.

Tiamiyu said; “The agency received the distress call at about 5.57 pm and on arrival at the scene, it was observed that a 20-capacity passenger boat belonging to Blue Sea capsized mid-sea en route Ikorodu from Lagos Island.

“Unfortunately, five persons – four adult females and one adult male – were confirmed dead and their bodies were deposited at the morgue of the Ikorodu General Hospital. Five persons, comprising four female and one male, were rescued alive.

“The exercise was carried out by the combined efforts of LASEMA, LASWA, LASAMBUS and SEHMU. The number of other rescued victims cannot be ascertained as they were brought to the jetty with other passing boats.”
