Maina drags Magu to court, demands apology, N10bn as damages

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and its chairman, Ibrahim Magu, have been drgged to court.

The plaintiff, a former Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT) chairman, Abdulrasheed Maina has asked for an apology, as well as N10 billion as damages.

In a suit Maina’s counsel, Mr. James Onyilo, filed on his behalf on January 15 before the High Court of Justice, Lafia, he alleged that Magu granted media interview, which were slanderous, untrue and malicious.

The lawyer in the writ of summons, therefore prayed the court to declare the alleged interview granted by Magu on November 30 and December 14, 2017 as being defamatory, injurious and intended to lower the reputation and integrity of the plaintiff in the estimation of right-thinking members of the society and bring him to public ridicule, odium, contempt and derision.

He further demanded that the court should order the defendants to retract and publish an apology to Maina in no less than three daily newspapers within seven days from the day of the judgment.

The counsel to the plaintiff also prayed the court to restrain the EFCC boss from making further comments considered defamatory to Maina.

More so, he sought for an order mandating the defendants to pay jointly and severally N10billion as damages for the publications.

“The 1st defendant (Magu), who has a personal score and vendetta to settle with the plaintiff using the instrumentality of the 2nd defendant (EFCC), maliciously embarked on a campaign of calumny against the plaintiff,” Onyilo stated in the statement of claim.
