Malawi prison band nominated for Grammy Awards

The month of February may be a month of global recognition and acclaim for a Malawi prison band surprisingly nominated for the prestigious Grammy Awards set to be staged next month.

Popularly known as the Zomba Prison Project band, the ensemble comprises convicted murderer Elias Chimenya, on bass guitar, burgler Stefano Nyerenda, and prison guard Thomas Binamo is one of the bands songwriters.

The musical talent of the trio was discovered in 2013 when US producer, Ian Brennan spent two weeks working with 60 inmates on a 20 track album titled ‘I Have No Everything Here’ which got nominated in the Best World Music category of the awards gala ceremony set to be staged in the city of Los Angeles, U.S.A.
