Man flees home, seeks divorce from bullying wife

The presiding judge of the Igando customary court in Lagos State, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, has dissolved the 20-year-old marriage between Durojaiye and Adenike Rodoye after the husband fleed his home accusing his wife of ripping apart his boxer’s shorts before forcefully having sex with him.

“My wife has turned my boxers into rags as she always tears them to rape me,” Durojaiye said while addressing the court.

In delivering his judgement, Mr Omilola said that he was convinced the couple could no longer live together as man and wife after listening to both of them saying he had exhausted all avenues to reconcile the couple but the petitioner still insists on a divorce.

“This court has no choice but to dissolve the union in spite of the fact that the wife still claims she loves her husband.

“Both parties are no longer husband and wife, as the marriage has broken down totally, they are free to go their separate ways,” Omilola ruled.

The petitioner also told the court that his wife has continuously threatened to kill him saying he was afraid she might one day carry out her threat.

“I had to run away from my 22-flat building to rent an apartment elsewhere just to avoid her frequent beatings, but she trailed me to my new apartment to fight me.

“I had reported her in the past to different police stations, but it did not yield any positive result,” he said.

The 56-year-old also told the court that his wife poured hot on the new wife his family married for him from the village begging the court to end their marriage saying he no longer loves his wife.

“Please, separate us before my wife kills me, my life is not safe with her, I am a pensioner, I need to enjoy the fruits of my labour,” he said.

The petitioner’s wife, 44-year-old Adenike Rodoye however denied the claims by her husband as she alleged that her husband is a womaniser saying she never raped him as it was only natural that a husband and his wife make love.

“My husband runs after anything in skirt; he always sends me packing from the house whenever he wants to bring in another woman. He once sent me out with the children for three years.

“After sending me out, he had married six different women, but none stayed long with him. He was always begging me to return to my matrimonial home later,” she said.
