Mayweather is certainly a solid fighter, McGregor admits

Following their August 26 superfight, Conor McGregor has shown his ‘respect’ to Floyd Mayweather referring to him as a solid fighter with ‘strong tools.’

McGregor, who was making his debut in professional boxing, fell in the tenth round of the match at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and handed Mayweather an unprecedented 50-0 undefeated career record.

In an emotional statement released by the Irishman on Thursday, he thanked his team and coaches for the intense practise they saw him go through before the fight, and thanked the fans as well for their support.

“I feel every decision we made at each given time was the correct decision, and I am proud of everyone of my team for what we done in the short time that we done it,” McGregor said.

“Thank you to all the fans for the support of the fight and the event! Without your support we as fighters are nothing so I thank you all!”

The 29-year old had always inferred that Mayweather was only a boxer and not really a ‘fighter’, but after his experience with the American in the same ring, he has a different report.

“Congrats to Floyd on a well fought match,” he added.

“He is a heck of a boxer. His experience, his patience and his endurance won him this fight hands down. I always told him he was not a fighter but a boxer.

“But sharing the ring with him he is certainly a solid fighter. Strong in the clinch. Great understanding of frames and head position.

“He has some very strong tools he could bring into an MMA game for sure.

“He’s very experienced and methodical in his work. I wish him well in retirement.”

After the victory last weekend, Mayweather also did heap praises on McGregor for the valiant effort he showed in their bout, and insisted he “was a lot better” than he expected.

“This was my last fight tonight, ladies and gentlemen,” Mayweather said as he finally retires from the sport.
