Messi, Suarez inspire Barca to El Clasico victory

Goals by Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi and Alexis Vidal gave Barcelona a deserved 3-0 victory in the first El Clasico of the La Liga season at the Bernabeu on Saturday.

Barca produced a superb away performance which successfully eliminates their arch rivals Real Madrid from the Spanish title race this season.

The Spanish champions, who had just lifted the Club World Cup, were in control early in the game but could not convert their chances to goals.

Karim Benzema hit the post and Cristiano Ronaldo missed two good chances as the first half ended goalless.

But a 53rd-minute strike by Suarez put the visitors ahead, before Messi’s penalty doubled their lead after Dani Carvajal was sent off for handballon 63 minutes.

Three minutes into stoppage time, Messi gets the ball on the right wing, danced past a couple of defender and pulls it back for any of the three players in the box, and Vidal gets the shot in after the keeper seemed to have saved the shot.

The win moves Barca nine points clear of Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga, and increased their advantage over defending champions Real to 14 points.

It is the first time Barca have won three consecutive away league matches at the Bernabeu, and the result leaves Zinedine Zidane’s side fourth in the table.
