Musa hands over Super Eagles captaincy to Mikel

Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, has handed the team’s captaincy to Chelsea’s midfielder, John Obi Mikel, saying his action became necessary to put the house back into unity.

Speaking at the team’s press briefing in Kaduna on Thursday, the CSKA forward said, “I want to announce now that from today, John Obi Mikel is our new captain.”

Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh last year took the captain band from Vincent Enyeama unceremoniously and handed it to Musa thereby overlooking the seniority in the team by bypassing Mikel who was the team’s vice captain.

The crisis led to a sharp division in the team which also led to the retirement of Enyeama from international football.

Mikel who made his debut for the Eagles in 2005 is expected to lead the Super Eagles when they battle the Pharaohs of Egypt on Friday in the AFCON 2017 qualifier in Kaduna.
