New NNPC GMD to dare Avengers over repairs of pipelines

The stage may have been set for a showdown in the creeks of the Niger Delta, as the new Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, has vowed to carry out repairs on oil and gas pipelines damaged by militants in the Niger Delta region.

The resolve of the new NNPC helmsman is however in breach of the stern warning handed down by the militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, which said the Federal Government must not carry out repairs of bombed oil and gas facilities.

Dr. Baru announced his resolve to repair the pipelines on Friday while formerly taking over from former GMD, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu.

Baru said: “We will repair and restore our oil and gas pipeline infrastructures as well as provide robust security system for both detection and deterrent. Improve refining efficiency of the four existing refineries to pave way for future expansion.”

It would be recalled that the NDA had warned of dire consequences, including human casualties, should government attempt repairs of the pipelines bombed by it until all issues are resolved.
