Paris to host 2024 Olympics as LA agrees to host in 2028

Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti has confirmed the decision of the American state to host the Olympic games in 2028, letting Paris to host in 2024.

Both cities had wanted to host the 2024 Summer games, with the winner to be officially named by the IOC on September 13 in the Peruvian capital Lima.

The French capital insisted it only wanted to host the Games in 2024, on the 100th anniversary of the city’s 1924 Olympics, prompting Los Angeles to soften its stance and consider hosting the 2028 Games.

Los Angeles has twice before hosted the Games, which are the biggest sporting event on the planet. They first did so in 1932 and then again in 1984.

Paris, on the other hand, hosted the Games in 1900 and 1924.

“I am proud to announce the Olympic Games are coming back to the United States of America,” Garcetti said at a ceremony at the StubHub Center stadium on Monday night.

“In 2028, we are bringing the Games back to LA, one of the great capitals of the Olympic movement. A city that has always been a Games changer and will be again in 2028.”

The IOC welcomed Los Angeles’ move, pledging to contribute $1.8bn to the organising committee.

As it stands, the cities to host the next three Olympic games are now known, as the next Olympics, in 2020, is due to be staged in Tokyo.
