Plot to kidnap Bishop, wife thwarted by police

An attempt to kidnap a Bishop and his wife was thwarted by men of the Nigerian police who intervened foiling the plot by suspected kidnappers.

Reports say the Bishop was at Isheri Osun area of Lagos yesterday when a group of gunmen intercepted his convoy and attempted to drag him out of his vehicle around 4:30 am.

But policemen attached to the Bishop’s convoy resisted the attempt by the gunmen who sporadically shot in the air after intercepting the vehicle conveying the cleric and his wife.

A gun battle ensued between the gunmen and the policemen attached to the Bishop’s convoy which lasted for several minutes.

However, the gunmen were overpowered after the cops called for back up from Isheri Division, therby forcing the invaders to flee into a nearby swamp.

According to Fatai Owoseni, Police Commissioner who confirmed the incident, said the couple were unhurt during the shootout but he noted that the gunmen fled with bullet wounds even as the body of Timi alias Big Fish, a man described as a notorious kidnapper, at Ishawo was recovered.

“We got a distress call that a group of armed robbers was operating at the area and we sent some policemen to the area. When our men got there, they discovered that the local vigilante group there rose to the challenge and faced the hoodlums squarely”, the CP said.

Continuing, he added that; “We found the body of the kingpin of the hoodlum. It was the killing of Timi Big fish that made people say kidnappers have returned to Ishawo.”
