Police uncover fresh plot to attack Benue, Taraba

An attempt to launch a fresh attack in a bid to kill scores of villagers in Benue and Taraba states by a terrorist group, operating under the guise of Fulani herdsmen has been uncovered by men of the Nigerian Police Force.

Reports say the police in Benue State got wind of the plot after it obtained an intelligence report which according to the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, revealed that the armed militia group had been holding clandestine meetings where plans to carry out the attack were being perfected.

Owoseni said; “The command has been following up closely with the activities of criminal elements that are hell-bent on causing trouble in Benue and other neighbouring states.

“We want to let the criminal elements know that we are following up with all their clandestine meetings, especially the gathering of some militia group who are planning to launch a fresh attack on Benue and Taraba states and who we gathered are operating under the guise of being Fulani herdsmen.

“We have this strong intelligence report and we are following them up. We gathered they are in some locations and are gathering money to procure ammunition for use to launch the attack and we are sharing this information with our counterparts in the areas where they have been holding clandestine meetings,” he added.

The revelation is coming a day after reports emerged that no less than 24 victims were murdered at Omusu-Edumoga village in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State.

The incident follows another killing of a 17-year-old student of Government Secondary School, Jebbu, Bassa in Plateau State on Monday evening by another group of herdsmen believed to be of Fulani extraction.

According to the local government chairman of Okpowu, Mr. Olofu Ogwuche, the heavily armed herders invaded Omusu-Edumoga village in broad-day light on Monday and opened fire on the residents, mostly women and children.
