In from Olumide Olaoluwa …

In an unprecedented response to a Tribunal order, the police have stated it would go ahead with the arrest of Senate President Bukola Saraki without further delay.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Olabisi Kolawole, said: “We are going to promptly arrest the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and produce him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Monday.

“Since it is a bench warrant issued by a competent court, the order will be carried out without delay. We don’t want to pre-empt anything,” Kolawole stated.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal on Friday issued a bench warrant for Saraki’s arrest for failing to appear in court in his ongoing trial for alleged false asset declaration.

It all still seem to me like “a dance of the forests”. What we thought was our fresh start seem to to be contaminated by the errors of our past, and this all now looks like the begining of a new journey to nowhere. God save Nigeria. Me don tire.

How does this seem like a dance in the forest? How? I would rather say this development actually marks the beginning of the application of rule of law in Nigeria. Noone should be above the law…. and it has to start with somebody.

I would have agreed with you if Saraki wasn’t the case in point here. To me, it is too conveniently coincidental that this new application of the rule of law would start with him. He is an errant party member who had incurred the wrath of his party bigwigs by maneuvering his way to Senate Presidency with the help of the opposition, and against the wishes of APC big shots. In my humble opinion, they are trying to get back at him, and using the anti corruption crusade to get public validation for their vindictiveness.
As far as I am concerned, Saraki is as corrupt as those calling for his head. If this new anti graft whirlwind sweeps through the entire political class and gets most of the guilty across board, I will be glad to change my position on this matter. But all I have seen so far doesn’t assure me that that will be the case.
By the way, A Dance Of The Forests, is a play by Wole Soyinka. He used it to warn Nigerians at Independence in 1960, that the past could pollute the future, but we dismissed him and his warnings.

I see your point Oise… but if Saraki has not transgressed the law, it will be difficult for the big wigs of his party to bring a criminal case against him. The war against corruption is essentially against the corrupt ruling class in Nigeria. If pursued selectively against perceived enemies by one government, an incoming regime will use it to pursue its own percieved enemies too. Ultimately, the relevant laws will be the final arbiter. The only beneficiaries will be the Nigerian people. So let the war begin. It is Saraki’s turn today, it will be some other big wig’s turn tomorrow.
