Ronaldo wins UEFA Player of the Year award

Real Madrid forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, has been crowned the 2016-17 UEFA men’s player of the year.

The 32-year old helped Madrid to a second consecutive Champions League title and finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 12 goals last season.

He beat Juventus’ Gianluigi Buffon and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi to the award, which was presented at the UEFA Awards ceremony at Monaco on Thursday evening.

Buffon, 39, was named the best goalkeeper of the year, while Real Madrid star Luka Modric was voted Midfielder of the Season.

Ronaldo, who has now won the Uefa’s player of the year award three times, also bagged the Forward of the Season award on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Netherlands and Barcelona star Lieke Martens was voted women’s Player of the Season, beating Wolfsburg striker Pernille Harder and Lyon midfielder Dzsenifer Marozsan to claim the prize.

Ronaldo was instrumental to Real’s success last season, while Martens helped the Netherlands win Euro 2017.

The winners of all awards of the evening were voted for by club coaches and selected European football journalists.
