Wayne Rooney scored his 200th Premier League goal in Everton’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Monday night.

The England international becomes only the second player to achieve the feat in the history of the league, after Newcastle United icon Alan Shearer who netted 260 goals.

“It’s been lonely in this @premierleague 200 club. Welcome and congratulations @WayneRooney”, Shearer tweeted immediately after the goal.

Rooney’s well-taken finish put Everton ahead in the 35th minute of the game, before Raheem Sterling equalised for the hosts in the 82nd minute.

“It was nice,” Rooney said of his goal.

“To do it today in such an important game for us, with tough games coming up, it was a sweet moment and I am sure the red half of Manchester will have enjoyed it as well.

“Everton have shown their ambition. We are trying to close that gap on the top teams.”
The 31-year-old Manchester United legend , who began his top flight career at Goodison Park, rejoined the Toffees on a free transfer in July.

He has scored in the side’s two opening games of the Premier League campaign, having been the hero in their 1-0 win over Stoke City last week.

Everton’s next game will be away to Hajduk Split in the second leg of their Europa League play-off on Thursday.
