RUSSIA PROBE: Trump's former lawyer Cohen bags 3-yr jail sentence

A US District Judge has sentenced Michael Cohen to three year’s in prison for his role in making illegal hush-money payments to women to help Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign and lying to Congress about a proposed Trump Tower project in Russia.

Judge William Pauley in Manhattan slammed Trump’s former lawyer with a three-year sentence for payments, which violated campaign finance law, and to two months for the false statements to Congress.

According to the US District Judge who said the two terms will run concurrently, Cohen’s cooperation with prosecutors “does not wipe the slate clean” of his crimes.

He also said that Cohen “appears to have lost his moral compass” and that a lawyer “should have known better”.

Cohen’s sentence is coming after he admitted to having contacts with Russian interests as far back as 2015.

That much was revealed in memo by the federal special counsel in a court filing weeks ago as investigations continue over Russia’s influence in the last election that brought Trump into power.

The memo revealed that Cohen was in touch as far back as 2015 with a Russian who offered “political synergy” with the Trump election campaign team.
