Sterling scores as City continue record-breaking streak

Premier League leaders, Manchester City have moved 15 points clear at the top as Raheem Sterling scored the only goal in a dominant display against Newcastle United.

The England winger poked home from Kevin de Bruyne’s pass on 31 minutes to earn Pep Guardiola’s side an 18th consecutive league victory– the longest in the history of the league.

The win is also their 11th consecutive away victory, matching the record for the English top flight set by Chelsea between April and December 2008.

A win against Crystal Palace in their next game would equal the European record of 19 successive wins set by Bayern Munich in the 2013-14 season under Guardiola.

“They soaked up the pressure really well and tried to counter-attack really well,” Sterling said after the game.

“But we put press on ourselves at times and it did not make it easy. We showed team spirit, stayed calm and got the win.

“We have got quite a few that can find the pass, these players can see a pass, you just have to make the run. It was a great team performance today and a great ball from Kevin de Bruyne for the goal.

“We need to keep winning and getting three points – that is most important thing”, he added.

Meanwhile, it is the fifth successive home defeat for Rafael Benitez’s side, which leaves them a point off the relegation zone.

City will play Crystal Palace on Sunday.
