Telecom operators top phone spammers in Nigeria —Report

A new report by caller ID app, Truecaller has revealed that telecom operators are the top phone spammers in Nigeria with the increase of mobile phone penetration across the continent.

The report by Truecaller identified 116 billion spam calls and 8.6 billion spam SMS in 2019, and it also added that emerging markets experienced more instances of spam calls and SMS than other countries.

Spamming is the activity of sending advertisements by email or text messages to people who do not want to receive them.

Three African countries according to reports featured among the top 20 countries in the world affected by spam calls in 2019, with South Africa, Nigeria, and Egypt ranked 6th, 18th, and 20th respectively. Each nation witnessed an average of 25.2, 8.4, and 7.9 spam calls per month respectively.

The report also added that Nigeria ranks much higher in 7th (65 spam SMS per month) for countries affected by spam SMS in 2019.

Ethiopia, South Africa, and Kenya however top the world rankings with a total of nine African countries affected.
