Three more killed in Venezuela's worsening anti-govt protests

Three more lives have been claimed in one day during ongoing anti-government protests in Venezuela bringing the total number of those killed in worsening demonstrations to 24.

One of the victims, a 42-year-old man who worked for local government in the Andean state of Merida died from a gunshot in the neck at a rally in favour of President Nicolas Maduro’s government.

Another 54-year-old man was shot dead in the chest during a protest in the western agricultural state of Barinas, the state prosecutor’s office added without specifying the circumstances.

Violent clashes between supporters of the opposition and President Maduro have hit Venezuela this month. The opposition is asking Maduro to step down, accusing him of eroding democracy.

The protests are also fueled by the crippling economic crisis in the oil-rich nation of 30 million people.
