Uganda: Museveni re-elected President amid wide protests

The incumbent President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni has been re-elected for a fifth term with more than 60 per cent of votes at the just concluded presidential elections marred by wide-spread violence and allegations of ballot fraud.‎

Closely following the former rebel leader who seized power in 1986 is Kizza Besigye with 35 per cent of votes.

Interestingly, Besigye was placed under house arrest shortly before the election results were announced.

‎John Kerry, US secretary of state, called Museveni to voice concern over Besigye’s detention, harassment of opposition figures and the shutdown of social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

The elections which now extends Museveni’s power into a fourth decade was overshadowed by arrests of politicians and allegations of rigging.
Uganda police carried out multiple arrests of opposition activists including Besigye who was arrested on four different occasions.
