Nadal to become world no. 4 after Madrid Open victory

Top seed Rafael Nadal Wednesday swept past Russian teenager Andrey Rublev in a quarterfinal match at the ongoing US Open to reach the last 4.

31-year-old Nadal saw off the 19-year old 6-1 6-2 6-2 in an hour and 37 minutes at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York City.

The Spaniard dominated his young opponent from start to finish and Rublev could not hide his frustration at failing to impress against his idol.

“It’s great to have a new generation coming. He is one of the players that has a great future and I wish him all the very best,” Nadal encouraged Rublev after his victory.

Nadal will now await Roger Federer in the semi-finals – should the Swiss beat Juan Martin del Potro in their quarterfinal clash early Thursday.

“It’s strange we’ve never played here,” Nadal said of his possible semifinal match with Federer.

“Of course it is a match I want to see. Two great players and I will be waiting for Roger or Juan Martin.”

Nadal is on course to lift his 16th Grand Slam title.
