#XENOPHOBIAINSOUTHAFRICA: Police take over Shoprite in Imo, beef up security in Enugu over reprisal attacks

The Owerri wing of Shop-rite, located along Egbu road in Imo State, has been taken over by men of the state police command, over fears of an attack by Nigerians on businesses owned by South Africans in the state.

Reports say policemen are fully in charge of the security of the establishment, closing all the gates into Shoprite, as they only opened a narrow gate through which some staff were allowed access.

Similarly, men of the Enugu State command have set up security apparatus in the state over possible reprisal attacks by residents of Enugu, and its environs on South African businesses.

Speaking to newsmen in Enugu on Wednesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said that security patrol in the state, especially within Enugu metropolis has increased.

He said; “The increased patrols and deployment to strategic locations of some businesses is to ensure that nothing untoward happen.

“The command is also appealing to residents not to take the law into their hands.

“But we expect that all will be law abiding even as the Federal Government is currently doing something on the development,’’ he said
