23-yr-old woman nabbed for selling six-week-old baby to buy mobile phone

A 23-year-old woman identified as Miracle Johnson is now telling men of the Edo State Police Command why she chose to sell her six-month-old baby and bought a mobile phone with the proceeds from the sale of her child.

In her confessional statement, the suspect who hails from Agenebode, in the Etsako East Local Government Area of the state, blamed her decision to sell her baby to the inability of her husband to take care of her and her children.

The suspect said she was paid the sum of N200,000 cash from the sale of her baby named, Greatness, who was sold to an orphanage in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The suspect said, “My baby was born on July 2. I sold her due to frustration. My husband was just struggling (to provide for us).

“My friend (Mama Joy) said that since my husband was not taking care of me, if I did it (sold the baby), I could give the money to my husband to start a business or buy a motorcycle.

“Two weeks later, she came back. I did not know what happened to me. So, I carried a bag, picked some things and left.

“I sold her to an orphanage in Onitsha. The orphanage bought the child for N200,000. I just bought only a phone; I did not want to buy it, but she (Mama Joy) forced me to do so,” she added.

The arrest of the suspect was confirmed by the Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr Johnson Kokumo who informed that the baby would be rescued while the suspect would be charged to court when
findings into the matter are concluded.

The State CP said, “It is an act against laws in Nigeria. Now that we have the woman in our net, we will definitely charge her to court. The baby will be rescued.”
