After admonition, grandson hacks grandfather to death
22-year-old Chukwuebuka Umunna is now cooling his heels in police custody after he allegedly hacked his grandfather to death for verbally scolding him.
The incident according to reports left many people of Umuoke Otulu Ahiara Autonomous community in Ahiazu Mbaise Council Area of Imo State in shock following its gruesome nature.
Younger brother of the murder suspect, Chigaemezu Umunna said his brother committed the crime on June 11, 2016, after his grandfather, Anusiem Umunna, had reprimanded Chukwuebuka and advised him to be of good behaviour.
Reports say Chukwuebuka who did not take his grandfather’s scolding also felt slighted when the deceased ordered him to go and fetch bamboo sticks to support yam tendrils in their farms on that fateful day.
According to Chigamezu, the suspect later ordered him to leave the house or he would deal with him severely and to avoid a confrontation, he left the house, not knowing Chukwuebuka had a plan.
Chigamezu said that on his return home, he was shocked to see the lifeless body of his grandfather who is said to be over a 100-years-old with deep machete cuts on his head while blood also flowed freely from his nose and mouth.
Mr. Julian Umunna, father of the suspect and second son of the deceased, revealed that all efforts to make Chukwuebuka learn a vocational skill came to nothing after he dropped out of school.
“Chukwuebuka has been uncontrollable and stubborn and he smokes Indian hemp openly and bullies anybody who cautions him. He was quarreling with my father when I was going to work that morning. I was shocked to hear a few hours later that he had killed my father with a machete. It was a very sad incident because such a thing had never happened in this entire village.”
Columbus Umunna, the first son of the decease said Chukwuebuka was the favourite grandson of his late father and wondered why he took the life of his grandfather.
“I had to rush down from Aba, Abia State as soon I was informed of the unfortunate incident and the first thing that crossed my mind was what could have happened between the two because I know that Chukwuebuka is the favourite grandson of my father. But I was devastated when I heard of the abominable incident because my father was about a 100 years.”
“The entire family is still in shock because nobody would have expected such an ugly incident. I know that Chukwuebuka is a stubborn young man but no one would have thought that he would kill his own grandfather in cold blood. Right now the body of my father has been deposited at the Madonna Hospital mortuary.” Colombus said.
DSP Andrew Enwerem, the Police Public Relations Officer, Imo State Police Command, who confirmed the incident said the suspect would soon be charged to court.
“This is a murder case and the police are still investigating the matter, and as soon as the investigation is concluded, the suspect will be charged to court”, he said.
