DRC ELECTION: Tension rises as ruling coalition, opposition both claim victory

In a bid to find a way out of the lingering political crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the African Union has called for a delay in announcing poll result citing serious doubts.

To that end, the AU has agreed to urgently send ‘high-level delegation‘ to Kinshasa to find way out of DRC’s political turmoil following last month’s disputed presidential elections.

“The Heads of State and Government attending the meeting concluded that there were serious doubts on the conformity of the provisional results, as proclaimed by the National Independent Electoral Commission, with the votes cast,” the AU said in a statement after a meeting at its headquarters in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.

As a result, it has “called for the suspension of the proclamation of the final results of the elections”.

The comments by the AU comes after the Southern African Development Community (SADC) called for a recount of votes of the elections in the DRC which was reportedly marred by irregularities.

The SADC- a 16 member regional block which includes Angola and South Africa also called for the formation of a national unity government.
